WORCESTER, Mass. – The Brandeis University women's soccer team overcame an early goal, taking the lead just before halftime and hanging on for a 2-1 victory at Clark University tonight.
TEAM RECORDS
- Brandeis, 3-2. Clark, 2-2.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Cougars got on the board in the 9th minute when Emma Tzachris's initial shot was stopped before going wide, but Emily Rooney was there to punch home the rebound.
- Brandeis equalized in the 28th minute on a corner kick. Sophomore back Rachel Watler (Stevenson Ranch, Calif. / West Ranch) made a perfect delivery to the head of junior Sydney Lenhart (Tucson, Ariz. / Salpointe Catholic) for the tying score.
- The Judges netted the game-winner with just 55 seconds to go before halftime. First-year Madison Sansone (Westport, Conn. / Staples) sent a perfect cross from the right flank, finding senior Juliette Carreiro (Upton, Mass./Nipmuc Regional) at the far post with a wide-open net.
- The Judges were able to keep Clark at bay in the second half, allowing the Cougars just one shot after intermission.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Brandeis outshot Clark, 15-5, for the game, including 7-3 in shots on goal.
- Sophomore Hannah Bassan (Aventura, Fla./NSU University School) had two saves for her third win of the season for the Judges.
- Clark's Annabella White had five stops in the losing effort.
- The Judges also had a 5-1 edge in corner kicks, while Clark was whistled for more fouls, 7-5.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Lenhart's goal was her third of the season and the seventh of her career.
- Carreiro's goal gave her a share of the team lead with Lenhart with three.
- It was the first game-winner of the season for Carreiro and the eighth GWG of her career, tied for 13th in school history.
- The goal was the 19th of Carreiro's career, moving her into a tie for 19th on the Judges' career list. With 55 points, she now ranks 17th all-time on the team's career points list.
- The assists were the first collegiate points for Watler and Sansone.
