WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University women's soccer team took a 2-1 lead into halftime today, but the Judges couldn't hang on, as the visiting Washington University Bears scored twice to escape with a 3-2 University Athletic Association victory on Gordon Field.

TEAM RECORDS

  • Brandeis, 7-7-1, 0-5 UAA.
  • Washington University, 8-4-5, 2-3 UAA.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Judges had the better of play in the first half, and it showed on the scoreboard.
  • Brandeis opened the scoring in the 14th minute when senior Juliette Carreiro (Upton, Mass./Nipmuc Regional) sent a terrific cross through traffic. Classmate Caroline Swan (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pine Richland) was on the other end and buried it to break the ice.
  • WashU equalized for the first time just under four minutes later, when Riley Alvarez punched home a feed from Kaci Karl after a corner kick in the 18th minute.
  • Brandeis went back on top in the 26th minute. Junior Sydney Lenhart (Tucson, Ariz./Salpointe Catholic) made a terrific move to shake free and deliver a cross to grad student Makenna Hunt (Tyngsboro, Mass./Tyngsboro). Hunt turned and beat WashU netminder Sidney Conner to give the Judges the 2-1 lead.
  • The Judges had a chance to extend their lead in the 33rd minute, when WashU cleared a ball off the line after a Brandeis corner and Conner followed up with a save on the rebound.
  • The Bears equalized again in the 56th minute as Grace Ehlert struck a ball from about 25 yards out just under the crossbar and over a leaping Hannah Bassan (Aventura, Fla./NSU University School) for her first goal of the season.
  • The winning goal came from one of the top goal scorers in the UAA, WashU's Maggie Brett, in the 66th minute. Ella Koleno saved a ball from going out along the end line, and she fed Brett, who turned and shot the ball into the far left netting for her ninth goal of the season.
  • Brandeis had four shots after falling behind, but Conner made two more saves to finish off the win.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • WashU had a 15-10 shooting advantage, including 8-3 in the second half.
  • Brandeis owned a 4-3 edge in corner kicks, and the Judges were called for nine fouls to seven for the visitors.
  • Bassan made six saves in the losing effort, while Conner had four stops, plus the one team clearance.
  • This was the sixth time in 15 games this season that there were four or more goals in a Brandeis game – they are 3-3 in those contests.

UP NEXT

  • Brandeis will play host to the University of Chicago on Sunday at 1:30 p.m., while WashU will be at NYU at the same time. NYU defeated Chicago, 2-1, this evening.
