Murphy paces Brandeis women at WPI Invitational

WORCESTER, Mass. -- Brandeis University rookie Joanna Murphy (Sarasota, Fla./Riverview) turned in the top performance for the Judges's women's swimming and diving team today in Day One at WPI's Gompei Invitational. 

In her only individual, event of the day, Murphy placed third overall in the 500-yard freestyle. Her time of 5:16.19 in the finals was about five seconds off the winning pace. 

The top performer for the Judges in terms of scoring events was junior Gabby Drillich (Harrington Park, N.J./Northern Valley Regional), who placed among the top 30 in three different events. Her best race was the 200-yard backstroke, where she won the B Final with a time of 2:20.35, which would have been good enough for seventh in the A race. In the individual medley races, Drillich placed 22nd in the 100 with a time of 1:09.15, and 23rd in the 200 with a time of 2:26.52. 

Other individual socrers for the Judges were sophomore Fallon Bushee (Malden, Mass./Mystic Valley Regional Charter Sch.), who placed 16th in the 200 IM with a time of 2:24.72, and classmate Fay Laborio (Cranston, R.I./Cranston West), who took 25th in the 200-yard backstroke in 2:29.18.

The Judges scored 179 points to finish in eighth place overall after Day 1 of the meet.
