Murphy wins twice in season opener for women's swimming

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University swimming and diving teams open the 2014-15 campaign today against the Wheaton College Lyons. The Judges had 10 individual race wins on the afternoon, but Wheaton captured both head-to-head dual meets. Brandeis lost 151.5 to 136.5 on the men's side, while the women fell, 191-94.

On the women's side, Wheaton sported a much deeper squad to earn the 97-point victory. Of Brandeis's three wins, two came from sophomore Joanna Murphy (Sarasota, Fla. / Riverview). Murphy claimed a pair of freestyle wins, taking the 200 by more than two seconds with a time of 2:01.39, and the 500 by a shade under 20 seconds with a time of 5:27.19. She was also second in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:24.56, 2.45 seconds off the pace.

Brandeis's other win came from a newcomer, with rookie Erin Gawronski (Norwich, N.Y./Norwich) capturing the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:21.18, a margin 1.46 seconds. She also placed second in the 100 fly (1:05.85).

Other second-place finishes for the Judges came from rookie Yi Sul Richter (Colorado Springs, Colo. / Vista Ridge) in the 1,000 free with a time of 12:08.76, and junior Fallon Bushee (Malden, Mass. / Mystic Valley Regional Charter Sch.) in the 100 free with a time of 58.01 seconds.

Brandeis returns to action next weekend for the University of Rochester Invitational.
