Murphy takes fourth in mile at WPI Invitational

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Brandeis University women's swimming and diving team finished with 582 points to finish in tenth place overall at the 2014 WPI Gompei Invitational on December 5-7.

DAY TWO RECAP

Sophomore Joanna Murphy (Sarasota, Fla. / Riverview High School) had the best finish for the Judges, finishing fourth in the freestyle mile.

Murphy swam the 1,650-yard freestyle with a time of 18:11.95, a slim .08-second margin of victory over the fifth place finisher from Clark University. This was the sophomore's second top-10 finish of the weekend. Rookie Yi Sul Richter (Colorado Springs, Colo. / Vista Ridge) had a good showing in the race finishing 16th overall with a time of 19:26.89.

The Judges had a number of top-20 finishes on Day Two from other rookie swimmers. Abby Damsky (New York, N.Y. / The Brearley School) finished 15th in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:05.39. Fellow rookie, Sherry Tu (Guangdong, China / Our Lady of Mercy School for Young Women) finished right behind her in 16th place at 1:05.69. Sam Greenberg (Colorado Springs, Colo. / Cheyenne Mountain) touched 18th in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:31.12.

The 400 IM race produced two top-20 finishers for Brandeis. Senior Gabby Drillich (Harrington Park, N.J. / Northern Valley Regional) finished 16th, one spot ahead of junior Theresa Gaffney (Braintree, Mass. / Braintree). Drillich touched at 5:09.73 and Gaffney followed her promptly at 5:10.12 in 17th place.

Brandeis finished the 200 medley relay in 14th place and touched 12th in the 400 free relay. The 200 medley relay team of rookie Amy Sheinhait (Framingham, Mass. / Framingham), junior Fallon Bushee (Malden, Mass. / Mystic Valley Regional Charter), Tu and sophomore Margot Farnet (Fayetteville, Ga. / Our Lady of Mercy Catholic) touched with a time of 1:59.98, while the 400 free relay of Sheinhait, Tu, rookie Maya Saar (Columbus, Ohio / Columbus School for Girls) and Bushee finished in 3:53.60.

The Judges return to action next semester at home against Colby on Jan. 10.
