WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis swim and dive teams took on the United States Coast Guard Academy today in their first home meet of the season. The Bears proved to be too much for the Judges, winning both sides of the meet. The final score for the men was Brandeis 102 Coast Guard 169, while the final score for the women was Brandeis 111 Coast Guard 167.
On the women's side, the top swimmers on the day were junior Monica Iizuka (Chatham, N.J. / Chatham) and first-year Nicole Caruso (Brentwood, Tenn. / Ravenwood High School). Iizuka started out the meet, leading off the 200 medley relay along with first-year Audrey Teo (Palo Alto, Calif. / Palo Alto High School), senior Bailey Gold (Berkeley Heights, N.J. / Governor Livingston), and senior Ema Rennie (Dublin, Ohio / Dublin Scioto). The relay took first place with a time of 1:50.98. Iizuka also swept the backstrokes, winning the 100 back with a time of 1:00.69 and the 200 back with a time of 2:13.39. Caruso swept the distance events today, winning the 1000 free with a time of 10:57.01 and the 500 free with a time of 5:20.82. She also took second place in her lone non-freestyle event of the day, the 200 individual medley, with a time of 2:14.76.
On the men's side, the top swimmers of the day were junior Sam Dienstag (Wilmette, Ill. / New Trier) and first-year Benjamin Lee (Upton, Mass. / Nipmuc Regional High School). Dienstag swept the distance events once again, winning the 1000 free with a time of 9:29.33 and the 500 free with a time of 4:41.55. Dienstag also won the 100 free with a time of 48.37, narrowly out touching first-year teammate Eric Xiao (College Station, Texas / AM Consolidated High School). Lee took first place in the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 1:46.31. He also took third place in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:02.96. Dienstag and Lee were joined by senior James Smith (Lexington, Mass. / Lexington High School) and sophomore Andrew Ngo (San Gabriel, Calif. / Gabrielino High School) for the 200 free relay, taking 2nd with a time of 1:30.10.
The Judges are back in action tomorrow when they host Tufts University at 12 PM.
