REDLANDS, Calif. -- The 28th-ranked Brandeis tennis team suffered its first loss of the season in the second match of their five-match swing through California, dropping a 6-3 decision to the University of Redlands. The Judges fall to 3-1 with the loss, while the Bulldogs improve to 3-1 as well.
Brandeis started off the afternoon well, winning two of three doubles matches. After the No. 2 tandem dropped the opening match, senior Rachel Rosman (Bonita Springs, Fla./Estero) and sophomore Faith Broderick (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville) improved to 7-3 on the season with an 8-4 victory. Rookies Alexa Katz (Philadelphia, Pa./Abington Friends) and Roberta Bergstein (Hingham, Mass./Hingham) gave the Judges a 2-1 lead with an 8-5 victory.
In singles action, Bergstein continued the Judges' momentum with a quick 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles, but the Bulldogs rallied to claim the final five singles points, four coming in straight sets. The Judges' closest match came at No. 5 singles, where junior Nina Levine (Westport, Conn./Staples) battled from a first-set loss to take the second in a tiebreaker, but ultimately lost a marathon third-set supertiebreaker, 2-6, 7-6, 12-14.
The Judges return to action against Occidental College on Thursday afternoon for the midpoint of their trip.
