LEWISTON, Maine -- All four Brandeis University entries reached the second round of the 2011 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) New England regional this weekend at Bates College.

The Judges were led by rookie Carley Cooke (San Diego, Calif/Point Loma), who advanced in both the singles and doubles draws. In doubles action, Cooke teamed with senior Nina Levine (Westport, Conn./Staples) to edge the duo of Smith and Jacobs of Wesleyan University, 9-7. They fell to the seeded tandem of Lok-Tse Leung - who went on to win the singles title - and Sally Wilkey of Middlebury, 8-4, in the second round. In singles play, Cooke prevailed in another tight match, topping Bowdoin's Emma Chow, 6-3, 7-5. In her second match, Cooke fell to top-seeded Jordan Brewer of Amherst, 6-3, 6-1.

Two Brandeis sophomore also won their first-round matches. Allyson Bernstein (Northbrook, Ill/Glenbrook North) routed Wellesley's Melissa Clark, 6-1, 6-1, then dropped a 6-2, 6-2 match against a 9-16 seeded player, Lauren Quisenberry of MIT. Classmate Roberta Bergstein (Hingham, Mass./Hingham) played one of the best matches of the entire tournament in the first round. Bergstein won a pair tiebreakers to defeat Nichols College's Lindsay Benoit, 7-6 (7-4), 5-7, 7-6 (7-4). The marathon match affected Bergstein's next match, which she lost to 9-16 seed Kathleen Elkins of Williams, 6-3, 6-0.

The Judges continue their fall schedule at the Middlebury Doubles tournament Oct. 7-8.
