WALTHAM, Mass. -- The Brandeis women's tennis team, ranked 23rd in the latest ITA Division III national poll, had little trouble in their first outdoor match in New England, taking down Babson College, 8-1, at home on the Rieger Tennis Courts.

Sophomore Carley Cooke (San Diego, Calif./Point Loma) led the way with a pair of wins in the No. 1 positions. She paired with senior Faith Broderick (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville) for an 8-5 win over Alex Freeman and Alexis Freeman in the closest doubles match of the day. Cooke then defeated Freeman in singles action, 6-4, 6-1.

Junior Allyson Bernstein (Northbrook, Ill. / Glenbrook North) was a double winner, earning an 8-4 win with classmate Marissa Lazar (Hewlett, N.Y./Lynbrook) at No. 3 doubles, and a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles. It was her first match this season in the second spot after playing her previous five matches at No. 3.

The No. 2 doubles squad of juniors Simone Vandroff (Moss Beach, Calif./Half Moon Bay) and Roberta Bergstein (Hingham, Mass./Hingham) also earned two points each. They were 8-4 winners in doubles action over the Beavers' Victoria Lorido and Minte Tamoshunas. Vandroff then defeated Tamoshunas at No. 3 singles, 6-4, 6-3, while Bergstein dispatched Lorido, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 4. Junior Alexa Katz (Philadelphia, Pa./Abington Friends) rounded out the Brandeis winners with a 6-3, 6-2, win at No. 5.

Brandeis returns to action next Friday when they co-host the Nor'Easter bowl along with Wellesley College.
