Three from Brandeis tennis advance at ITA regionals

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University tennis teams had three singles competitors advance past the first round of the 2013 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Northeast Regional tournaments this weekend.

The Brandeis women had two players win a match in the tournament held at Williams College. Senior Roberta Bergstein (Hingham, Mass./Hingham) rolled past her opponent, Maya Sayarath of Mount Holyoke, 6-4, 6-1, in the opening round. She fell to seeded Sam Gann of Tufts, 6-3, 6-3, in the second round.  Also advancing from the round of 64 was sophomore Maya Vasser (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle), who edged  Babson's Dina Weick in three sets, 7-5, 3-6 and 10-4 in a third-set super-tiebreaker. Vasser fell to Williams' Linda Shin, 6-1, 6-0, in the second round.

For the men at Middlebury College, rookie Michael Arguello (Brentwood, Tenn./Brentwood) moved on, taking out Rohan Shastri of Williams College in a three-set marathon. After dropping the first set, 1-6, Arguello edged his opponent in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-5), in the second. The rookie then captured the match with a 6-3 decision in the third. Arguello fell to Nikola Telkedzhiev of Tufts in the second round, 6-3, 6-2. Both of his opponents are still alive in at least one draw of the tournament, with  Telkedzhiev reaching the singles semis and Shastri the final four of the doubles draw.
