Bergstein wins twice, but #24 women's tennis falls to #28 La Verne

LA VERNE, Calif. — In the second leg of a three-match February break trip to California, the Brandeis University women's tennis team, ranked 24th in Division III, fell to the #28 University of La Verne, 6-3.

     Brandeis fell to 1-2, with both losses coming against other nationally-ranked squads. La Verne improved to 4-0, with three of their wins coming against other Top 30 teams. T

he top performance of the day for the Judges came from senior Roberta Bergstein (Hingham, Mass./Hingham), who helped produce two of the team's three points. Bergstein teamed with sophomore Sarita Biswas (Bedford, Mass./Bedford) to avoid a doubles sweep, winning 8-6 in the third spot. In singles action, Bergstein rolled to victory losing just one game at No. 4, 6-0, 6-1. Brandeis's other point came at second singles, where senior Allyson Bernstein (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) won, 6-4, 6-2. The Leopards won the other four singles matches in straight sets, including at No. 1, where Andrea Madrigal topped Judge junior All-American Carley Cooke (San Diego, Calif./Point Loma), 6-2, 6-2.

      The Brandeis women return to action on Saturday at the University of Redlands.
