#22 Women's tennis blanks Bentley, 9-0

WALTHAM, Mass. -- In a battle of cross-town rivals, the Brandeis University women's tennis team, ranked No. 22 in Division III, handily defeated Division II Bentley University, 9-0. The Judges even their record at 8-8, while the Falcons fall to 7-7.

In doubles action, no Brandeis tandem lost more than three games. The Judges earned 8-3 wins at the first and third spots, while seniors Allyson Bernstein (Northbrook, Ill. / Glenbrook North) and Marissa Lazar (Hewlett, N.Y. / Lynbrook) rolled to an 8-1 win at No. 2.

In singles play, the Judges won six different sets at love. Leading the way were the No. 3 and 4 positions, where senior Roberta Bergstein (Hingham, Mass./Hingham) and sophomore Emily Eska (Princeton, Mass./Wachusett Regional) both defeated their opponents without dropping a game, 6-0, 6-0. 

Juniors Simone Vandroff (Moss Beach, Calif./Half Moon Bay) and Carley Cooke (San Diego, Calif.) each had one love set. At No. 5, Vandroff took a 6-2, 6-0, victory, while Cooke was a 6-0, 6-3, winner at No. 1. Sophomore Maya Vasser (New Rochelle, N.Y. / New Rochelle) dropped just two games at No. 6, 6-1, 6-1. 

The closest match of the afternoon came at No. 2 singles, where Bernstein outlasted Bentley's Catherine Gianino, 6-4, 6-3. 

The Judges are now off for a full week until April 18, when they will take on Bates College at 10 a.m. and Simmons College at 3 p.m.
