First-year doubles tandem advances to Day 2 of ITA Regionals

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Brandeis University women's tennis team sent a pair of first-year players to the second day of action in the main draw of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regional Championships at Bowdoin College.

In the doubles tournament, the team of newcomers Sabrina Loui (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School) and Bhakti Parwani (Ahmedabad, India / Kumkum School) were one of f) ive unseeded teams to reach the Round of 16 today. In the opening round, they knocked off the tandem of Anya Ramras and Maggie Owensby of Amherst, 8-3. In the second round, they upset the eighth seed from Wesleyan University, the 2021 NCAA tournament runners-up, Katie Fleishman and Renna Moshen-Breen, by an 8-6 score. The Judges will take on Gena Huang and Sami Remis of Middlebury, one of the 9-16 seeds.

Loui also reached the second day of action in the 'B' singles draw. She earned a first-round bye, then defeated Ramras of Amherst for the second time on the day, 8-6, to reach the Round of 16.

The Judges had three other first-round winners on the day. In the main draw, senior Ana Hatfield (Rockford, Ill. / Boylan Central Catholic) defeated Ashley Felix of Smith College, 7-6, 6-2, in the opening round. Hatfield took the first-set tiebreaker by a 7-0 score. She fell in the second round to 9-16 seed Fleishman of Wesleyan, 6-3, 6-2.

In the 'B' draw, another first-year player, Anastasia Sia (Thessaloniki, Greece / Anatolia College) defeated Angelina Shyltsyna of Trinity, 8-4, before falling to Wesleyan's Moshen-Breen, 8-5. Sophomore Jiayi Zhang (Shanghai, China / Shanghai International) defeated Bates's Drew Lyon, 8-5, but lost to Seraphin Castellano of MIT by the same score.

DAY TWO

On the second day of action at the ITA Regionals at Bowdoin, Loui and Parwani knocked off their second-straight seeded opponents. They took the pairing of Gena Huang and Sarah Remis, a 9-16 seed, to a tiebreaker, where the Judges prevailed, 8-7 (8-6), to reach the quarterfinals. In the quarters, facing the second-seeded team of Elle Christiansen and Tilly Rigby of Tufts, who advanced when their foes from Williams withdrew, the Judges suffered an 8-4 defeat. 

Loui also fell to a Tufts player in the 'B' singles draw, dropping a 6-4, 6-1, decision to the Jumbos' Michelle Shub. 

The Judges' fall campaign is over and they will head to California over February break to play the dual-meet season.
