Women's tennis advances to UAA Fifth-Place match with 5-1 win over NYU

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – The seventh-seeded Brandeis University women's tennis team upset sixth-seeded New York University in the consolation semifinals of the 2022 University Athletic Association tournament, posting a 5-1 victory at Sanlando Park in Florida. The Judges, who avenged an earlier 5-4 loss to NYU, improve to 5-12 on the season, while the Violets fall to 3-6.

As in the previous meeting between the two teams, Brandeis won two out of three doubles matches. First-year Cecilia Denis (Ardmore, Pa. / Lower Merion) and sophomore Nikita Salkar (Mumbai, India / Mourataglou Tennis Academy) opened with an 8-1 win at #3. NYU's Carol Plakk and Jimena Menendez answered with an 8-4 win at #2 to even things up. Brandeis rookies Bhakti Parwani (Ahmedabad, India/Kumkum School) and Sabrina Loui (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School) gave the Judges the edge headed into singles with an 8-4 win of their own at #1.

In singles action, Brandeis rolled to its three wins, not dropping more than two games in any set. First-year Anastasia Sia (Thessaloniki, Greece / Anatolia College) got things rolling with a 6-1, 6-0, win at #5. Loui was a double-winner with a 6-0, 6-2, victory at #3, and sophomore Jiayi Zhang (Shanghai, China / Shanghai International) closed things out at #6, 6-2, 6-2.

The Judges will advance to the UAA Fifth-Place match tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. against Washington University.
