LEWISTON, Maine – The Brandeis University women's tennis team had a successful opening weekend of the 2022-23 season, winning two A flights and sending seven individuals and doubles teams to the semifinals of the 2022 Wallach Invitational at Bates College this weekend.

SINGLES

  • Sophomore Anastasia Sia (Thessaloniki, Greece / Anatolia College) captured the 'A' singles flight. She defeated Laura Littlefield of host Bates, 6-3, 6-1, in the first round. In the quarterfinals, she outlasted third-seeded Sam Riordan of Colby, 7-6 (8-6), 4-6, 10-8, in a third-set super-tiebreaker. In the semis on Sunday, Sia knocked off second seed Joanna Atwater of Bates, 6-2, 7-5. Sia was slated to face first-year teammate Rebecca Suarez (Huntington, N.Y. / International Virtual Learning Academy) in the finals, the first time two Judges were slated to meet in the Wallach finals, but the players did not play in order to stay fresh for next week's ITA Championships.
  • Suarez, the top seed in the A flight, had a first-round bye, then defeated Trinity's Josephine Kimball, 6-3, 6-1 in the quarters. She advanced to the finals with a 6-2, 3-6, 11-9 win over Isabella Hartman of the Bantams.
  • In B singles, first-year Phoebe Tamaoki (Cambridge, Mass. / Cambridge Rindge and Latin) reached the semis after a first-round bye and a quarterfinal win over Lizzie Frekko of Bates, 6-2, 6-1. She was edged by Colby's Caroline Kittle, 0-6, 6-4, 10-8, in the semis.
  • In the C flight, fourth-seeded junior Ella Subramanian (Parkland, Fla. / Laurel Springs) reached the finals. She had a first-round bye, and in the second round survived a match with Drew Williams of Bates, 1-6, 6-3, 10-8. Subramanian made it to the finals thanks to a walkover against teammate Cecilia Denis (Ardmore, Pa. / Lower Merion), who had defeated Grace Kennedy of Bates, 6-1, 6-4, and top-seeded Mallika Chari of Colby, 6-4, 6-2. Subramanian lost a tight final match to Caileigh McLean of Colby, 6-7 (4-7), 6-3, 10-3.

  • In the A doubles flight, Suarez teamed with sophomore Bhakti Parwani (Ahmedabad, India / Kumkum School) to win the title as the top seeds. The two had a first-round bye, then outlasted Shyltsyna and Baker of Trinity, 8-7 (7-2) in the second round. They had an easier time in the semifinals, defeating the fourth seeds Riordan and Omiciolli of Colby, 8-2, and in the finals, when they bested third-seeded Atwater and Friedman of Bates, 8-3.
  • In the B doubles action, Subramanian and Tamaoke reached the semis as the fourth seeds, defeating Williams and D'Aquino of Bates, 8-2, in the quarters before falling to Gershaw and McClain of Colby, the second seeds, 8-6.
