#40 women upset #19 CalTech, 5-4

PASADENA, Calif. – The Brandeis University women's tennis team got its annual February break trip to California off on the right foot today as the Judges, ranked 40th in Division III by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, defeated 19th-ranked CalTech, 5-4.

TEAM RECORDS

  • Brandeis: 2-2, #40 in Division III.
  • CalTech: 0-1, #19 in Division III.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Judges jumped out to a 2-1 lead after doubles action. Sophomore Cecelia Denis (Ardmore, Pa./Lower Merion) and junior Ella Subramanian (Parkland, Fla./Laurel Springs) opened the scoring at #3 with an 8-4 win.
  • CalTech answered with an 8-4 win at #2, but sophomore Bhakti Parwani (Ahmedabad, India / Kumkum School) and first-year Rebecca Suarez (Huntington, N.Y. / International Virtual Learning Academy) gave Brandeis the advantage with a late break for an 8-6 win at #1.  
  • The Beavers their first lead after posting wins at #4 and #3 in straight sets.
  • Parwani earned her second win of the match at #2, 6-1, 6-2, to even the match at 3-all.
  • Judge sophomore Anastasia Sia (Thessaloniki, Greece / Anatolia College) put the Judges ahead, 4-3, with a 6-4, 6-3, win at #5, but CalTech's Emily Zhang knocked off Suarez, 6-3, 6-2, at #1 to put the pressure on the team's #6 players.
  • CalTech's Payal Patel won the first set, 6-4, but Brandeis first-year Ella Chase (Lincoln, Mass. / Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) rallied, winning the last two sets 6-0, 6-3, to secure the victory.
