#1 doubles pulls upset as women's tennis drops UAA quarter to Emory, 5-1

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – In the first round of the 2023 University Athletic Association tournament, the 31st-ranked and seventh-seeded Brandeis University women's tennis team pulled a significant upset in doubles action, but the Judges fell to second-seeded and seventh-ranked Emory University in the quarterfinals.

TEAM RECORDS:

  • Brandeis: 9-9, ranked #31 in Division III.
  • Emory: 10-5, ranked #7 in Division III.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The highlight of the day for the Judges came at #1 doubles, where first-year Rebecca Suarez (Huntington, N.Y. / International Virtual Learning Academy) and sophomore Bhakti Parwani (Ahmedabad, India / Kumkum School), who are ranked 10th in the Northeast Region by the ITA, handily defeated the Eagles' Ana Cristina Perez and Emily Kantrovitz, 8-2.
  • Emory rolled at #2, 8-1, and at #3, 8-4, to take a 2-1 lead into singles action.
  • The Eagles won three straight-set matches at #5 (6-1, 6-2), #6 (6-4-, 6-3) and #3 (6-0, 6-3) to clinch the victory.
  • In the three unfinished matches, the Judges took three first sets from the Eagles. Suarez led Emory's Stephanie Shulman, 6-3, 2-6, 1-0, at #1 when the match was called.
  • At #2, Parwani was ahead of Katrovitz, 7-5, 2-1, while sophomore Phoebe Tamaoki (Cambridge, Mass. / Cambridge Rindge and Latin) was nearing a split with Eliza McPherron, 7-6 (7-5), 1-5.

  • The Judges take on 3rd-seeded and 14th-ranked Carnegie Mellon tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. The Tartans were upset by #6 seed Washington University.
