Women's track takes second place at 2009 Poyau Memorial

WALTHAM, Mass. -- The Brandeis women's track and field team had five winning performances, including another NCAA qualifying performance from senior Anat Benun (Haifa, Israel/Ironi-Hey) and a sweep of the top three spots in the mile run, along with a fine all-around performance from senior Ali Sax (Lincoln, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury), who earned three runner-up performances, to take second place at their only home meet of the season, the Reggie Poyau Memorial Invitational.

Benun turned in her second NCAA qualifying performance of the season in the triple jump. Her distance of 38 feet even was 3 1/4 inches shorter than her season best, but was still enough to outdistance teammate Sax by nearly two feet. Sax's other second-place finishes came in the long jump, where she tied for the top spot on distance at 16 feet, 11 1/4 inches, but was awarded second place by the judges, and in the 55-meter hurdles, where she qualified with the fastest time in preliminaries at 8.92 seconds, but finished second in the finals by six-hundredths of a second.

The Judges' highest scoring event was the mile runs, where junior Beth Pisarik (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) won with a time of 5:11.36, while sophomores Grayce Selig (Philadelphia, Pa./Springside)  and Hannah Lindholm (Madison, Wis./West High) were second and third in 5:18.19 and 5:18.98, respectively.

Also earning wins for the Judges were junior Suzanne Bernier (Hanson, Mass./Whitman-Hanson) in the high jump with a height of 5 feet, 3 inches; sophomore Michelle Gellman (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchhill) in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:01.00; and the 4x800-meter relay team of Lindholm, Pisarik, junior Julia Alpaio (Cranston, R.I./Cranston East) and sophomore Marie Lemay (Saco, Maine/Thornton Acad.) with a time of 9:52.61.
