Sax qualifies for nationals in triple jump

MEDFORD, Mass. - The Brandeis track and field teams produced three winners and two NCAA qualifying performances at this weekend's Tufts University Stampede. The meet was a non-scoring event.

The highlight of the meet for the Judges was the women's triple jump, where Brandeis competitors took the top two spots. Senior Anat Benun (Haifa, Israel/Ironi-Hey) produced her third NCAA Championship qualifying performance, improving her distance by one centimeter to 11.67 meter (38 feet, 3 ½ inches), while classmate Ali Sax (Lincoln, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury) earned her first-ever NCAA qualifying mark with a distance of 11.26 meters (36 feet, 11 ½ inches). Benun is now ranked fourth in the nation, while Sax is 13th.

There were parallels in the Judges' other two victories on the day, a both the men's and women's mile run were captured by competitors from the same high school. Junior Beth Pisarik (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) captured the women's mile by a margin of six seconds in 5:10.04, topping a field of 28 runners. Rookie Kate Warwick (Box borough, Mass./Acton-Boxborough) placed third in the mile with a time of 5:18.35. Meanwhile, for the men, rookie Chris Brown (No. Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) outpaced a foe from Division II UMass-Lowell by just over a second to take the mile in 4:22.70.

Other top performances for the men came in the 1000-meter run, where senior Matt Jennings (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury) came in third in 2:32.10, one second ahead of sophomore teammate Devon Holgate (Cumberland, R.I./Cumberland).
