MEDFORD, Mass. -- The Brandeis University women's track and field team placed 13th out of 15 teams that scored points today at the Tufts Winter Invitational.

Brandeis had two scoring performances in the 1,000-meter run. Junior Kelsey Whitaker (Kingston, Mass./Notre Dame Acad.) led the Judges with her first win of the season. She ran the 1,000 in 3:01.22, more than two full seconds ahead of the runner-up from UMass Lowell. Also scoring for Brandeis in the 1,000 was sophomore Ashley Piccirillo-Horan (North Granby, Conn./Granby Memorial), who placed fifth with a time of 3:07.70, less than half a second out of fourth. Rookie Kyra Shreeve (Northborough, Mass./Algonquin Regional) just missed a third scorer in the event, placing ninth with a time of 3:11.36.

In the sprints, rookie Haliana Burhans (Charlotte, Vt./Champlain Valley Union) also narrowly missed out on contributing to the Judges' score. She was ninth in the 200-meter dash by just two-hundredths of a second, finishing in 27.19 seconds. She was also 10th in the 400 with a time of 1:04.44, but was well behind the last scorer.

The Judges return to action next Saturday at the Smith College Invitational.
