Campbell, Morrongiello finish second at Tufts as Judges place seventh

MEDFORD, Mass. – The Brandeis women's track and field team had a seventh-place finish at the 2022 Tufts Branwen Smith-King Invitational, scoring 35.5 points in the process. The Judges had a trio of second-place finishes to lead the way.

Running in her second meet of the season, sophomore Alya Campbell (Eastchester, N.Y. / Eastchester) was the runner-up in the 60-meter hurdles. She ran 9.89 seconds to win her heat and qualify for the finals, then ran 9.97 seconds in the finals. Junior Victoria Morrongiello (Staten Island, N.Y. / Susan E. Wagner) had the Judges' other second-place finish, running the 600-meter run in 1:42.26, four seconds behind first place, but also four seconds ahead of third. It was a personal best in the event by about 0.80 seconds.

Another competitor running for the second time this weekend was senior Devin Hiltunen (North Quincy, Mass./Quincy) who was fourth in the 60-meter dash. She ran 8.16 in the prelims and 8.13 in the finals, just 0.01 off her lifetime best.

Rookie Kayla DiBenedetto (Andover, Mass. / Andover) earned a fifth-place in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:31.22, finishing 0.59 ahead of the sixth-place finisher. The final individual scorer in track events was first-year Hannah Bohbot-Dridi (Mountain View, Calif. / Los Altos), who placed seventh in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:07.81.

The Judges added a second-place relay finish in the 4x200-meters, as the team of senior Anna Touitou (Pleasantville, NY / Pleasantville), Bohbot-Dridi, Campbell and Hiltunen ran a time of 1:50.08.

Brandeis added a half a point in field events as sophomore Smiley Huynh (Bronx, N.Y. / Bronx H.S. of Science) tied for eighth place in the pole vault with a height of 2.95 meters (9-8).

The Judges return to action next weekend at Tufts for the Cupid Invitational.
