Judges place third at Reggie Poyau Memorial behind two wins, five seconds

WALTHAM, Mass. -- The Brandeis University track and field teams kicked off 2023 with their annual Reggie Poyau '04 Memorial meet at home. The Judges placed third on both sides, behind only Division I and II opponents. The men tallied 70 points, while the women had 64, including the team's two wins on the day.

TOP PERFORMERS 

  • For the women, junior Alya Campbell (Eastchester, N.Y. / Eastchester) had one of the most impressive performances of the day, winning the 60-meter hurdles. After running 9.63 seconds in the prelims, Campbell won the finals by a margin of 0.12 seconds with a time of 9.29 seconds. She was just eight-hundredths of a second off the school record held by teammate Sonali Anderson (Fayetteville, Ga./Whitewater)

  • First-year Shaniece Nugent (Hartford, Conn. / Lawrence Academy) had an impressive collegiate debut. She won the triple jump and finished second in the long jump. Nugent went from third to first on her final leap of the triple jump, finishing with a distance of 10.86 meters (35-7 ½). In the long jump, she went from eighth to second on her final attempt, finishing at 5.14 meters (16-10 ¼). 

  • Brandeis had four other second-place finishes, three coming on the men's side. Senior Matthew Driben (Reading, Pa./Wyomissing Area) was the runner-up in the 3000-meter run with a time of 8:57.77, 2.32 seconds behind the winner from Assumption. 

  • Senior Dion Morris-Evans (Canal Fulton, Ohio / Northwest) was second in the men's 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.84 seconds. He led a contingent of three Judges in the finals, with first-year TJ Showstead (Plymouth, Mass. / Plymouth North) finishing fourth (9.48 seconds) and junior Ori Slotky (Closter, N.J. / Northern Valley Regional) taking fifth in 9.52 seconds.

  • The 4x400-meter relay team of first-year TJ Carleo (Newburyport, Mass. / Newburyport), junior captain Samuel Kim (La Jolla, Calif. / Phillips Exeter (N.H.), sophomore Danny Krigman (Chelmsford, Mass. / Chelmsford) and junior captain Parker Jones (Westbury, N.Y. / Packer Collegiate Institute) won their heat and finished second with a time of 3:38.79.

  • In the 400-meter dash for the women, sophomore Hannah Bohbot-Dridi (Mountain View, Calif. / Los Altos) was second with a time of 1:01.87, just 0.12 seconds out of first place.
