Campbell just misses school record in hurdles

WALTHAM, Mass. -- This Saturday, the Brandeis University track and field teams competed in thirteenth place at the Cupid Invitational at Tufts University in Medford, Mass. The men's team finished 8th and the women's team finished 13th.

TOP WOMEN'S PERFORMERS

  • Junior Alya Campbell (Eastchester, N.Y. / Eastchester) had a very impressive day. She finished in fifth place in the 60-meter hurdle finals with a time of 9.22 seconds, .28 seconds faster than her preliminary time of 9.50 seconds. This is a personal record and only .01 seconds off of the Brandeis school indoor record, set last year. Campbell also finished 19th in her first ever 60-meter dash, with a time of 8.53 seconds.
  • First-year Shaniece Nugent (Hartford, Conn. / Lawrence Academy) finished in fourth place and set a personal record for the triple jump, with a score of 10.98 meters (36-0 ¼).
  • The 4x400-meter relay team of senior Devin Hiltunen (Quincy, MA / North Quincy), Junior Ianna Gilbert (Queens, N.Y. / Young Women's Leadership School of Queens), first-year Ella Warkentine (Malvern, Pa. / Conestoga), and senior Victoria Morrongiello (Staten Island, N.Y. / Susan E. Wagner), finished sixth with a time of 4:22.37.
  • Three personal records were set in the weight throw. First-year Emma Liu (Las Vegas, Nev. / Phillips Exeter Academy) finished seventh with a score of 12.44 meters (40-9 ¾), sophomore Kate Hurlbert (Richmond, Va. / Trinity Episcopal School) finished 18th with a score of 10.69 meters (35-1), and first-year Diane Meyer (Plymouth, Minn. / Wayzata) finished 26th with a score of 9.45 meters (31-0).
  • Two personal records were set in the 800-meter dash. Junior Liz Korn (Piedmont, Calif. / Piedmont) finished tenth with a time of 2:31.76, and senior Yahni Lapa (West Newton, Mass. / Newton North) finished 17th with a time of 2:34.30.
  • First-year Ella Warkentine (Malvern, Pa. / Conestoga High School) finished ninth in the mile, setting a personal record time of 5:20.66 and the team's season best.

TOP MEN'S PERFORMERS

  • Brandeis had one first-place finish, coming in the men's 800-meter run. First-year TJ Carleo (Newburyport, Mass. / Newburyport) debuted in this race, finishing first with a time of 1:56.25. That is the 2022-23 team season-best.
  • Senior Dion Morris-Evans (Canal Fulton, Ohio / Northwest) finished 12th in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.01 seconds, good for the second-best team score on the season, only trailing his own personal record. Morris-Evans also finished seventh in the long-jump, with a distance of 6.05 meters (19-10 ¼).
  • The 4x400-meter relay team of Carleo, junior Ori Slotky (Closter, N.J. / Northern Valley Regional), Morris-Evans, and first-year Leo Schiappa (Wareham, Mass. / Old Rochester Regional) finished third with a time of 3:34.16.
  • Slotky set two personal records. In the triple jump finals, he finished in 8th place, at 12.33 meters (40-5 ½), a team season high. In the 60-meter hurdles, he finished 14th with a time of 9.40.
  • Sophomore Danny Krigman (Chelmsford, Mass. / Chelmsford) finished seventh in the 200-meter dash, with a time of 23.62 seconds. This was just 0.04 seconds off of his personal record and the team's season-best. Krigman also finished 19th in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7:34 seconds.
  • Senior Zachary Reynolds (Cherry Valley, Mass. / Leicester) set a team season-high for the weight throw, tossing it 13.39 meters (43-11 ¼). This was also a personal record.
