WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University indoor track and field team played host the 2023 University Athletic Association championships today, producing six scoring performances and sending four competitors to tomorrow's finals. Both the Brandeis men and women were in sixth place after the first day of action, with the women scoring 10 points and the men, 7.  

SCORING PERFORMANCES

• Sophomore Smiley Huynh (Bronx, N.Y. / Bronx H.S. of Science) was the top performer of the day for the Brandeis women, earning points in two different events. She placed fourth in the pole vault with a height of 3.43 meters (11-3), setting a new p.r. in the process. Huynh cleared her first three heights on her first attempt before missing at 3.58. She also scored in the long jump with a distance of 5.03 meters (16-6), just off a season best.
• The men had two individuals score points. Senior Dion Morris-Evans (Canal Fulton, Ohio/Northwest) scored in the high jump for the second year in a row. He earned All-UAA honors last year, but finished in sixth place this year with a height of 1.88 meters (6-2). Morris-Evans had the same height as the two jumpers ahead of him, but had one additional miss to put him in sixth.
•  Senior Artemis Reynolds (Cherry Valley, Mass. / Leicester) snuck into the scoring column in the 35-pound weight throw with a distance of 14.21 meters (46-7.5). Reynolds tied with the competitor ahead of him, but finished eighth based on his second-best throw. He set a new personal-record in the event by more than foot.
• Brandeis also scored in both distance medley relays. The men's team of first-years TJ Carleo (Newburyport, Mass. / Newburyport) and Leo Schiappa (Wareham, Mass. / Old Rochester Regional) and juniors Samuel Kim (La Jolla, Calif. / Phillips Exeter (N.H.) and Willem Goff (Pelham, Mass. / Amherst Regional) ran a time of 10:43.93 to place sixth.
• For the women, first-year Ella Warkentine (Malvern, Pa. / Conestoga), sophomore Hannah Bohbot-Dridi (Mountain View, Calif. / Los Altos) and seniors Victoria Morrongiello (Staten Island, N.Y. / Susan E. Wagner) and Bridget Pickard (Westwood, Mass./Westwood) were seventh in 12:44.79.

ADVANCING TO THE FINALS

• Both the women and men sent two competitors to tomorrow's finals in today's prelims.
• On the women's side, junior Alya Campbell (Eastchester, N.Y./Eastchester) turned in the day's seventh-fastest time in the 60-meter hurdles at 9.31 seconds.
• Junior Liz Korn (Piedmont, Calif. / Piedmont) was the sixth finisher in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:00.15.
• For the men, Carleo is into the finals of the 800-meter run with a time of 1:54.25, a full two seconds than his previous career-best in the event. He was seeded 10^th in the 800 entering the meet.
• Morris-Evans will try to score in a second event in the 60-meter hurdles, where he ran a time of 8.65 seconds. He shaved 0.01 off his previous career-best despite hitting one of the hurdles rather hard.

UP NEXT              

• The Judges will also have several competitors in the mile, 3000-meter run and in field events tomorrow that did not contest prelims today.
