AMHERST, Mass. -- The Brandeis University volleyball team
dropped its third match in a row at the Amherst College
Invitational today before bouncing back to close out the tournament
with a victory.
The Judges (6-4) opened play with a four-game loss to Middlebury
College. After splitting the first two games, 27-30, 30-21,
Brandeis fell to the Panthers in a pair of close games, 26-30,
28-30. First-year middle blocker Piera Carfagno (Los Angeles,
Calif.) had a fine all-around performance with 16 kills, six
service aces and three blocks. Junior opposite Ashley Powers
(Waltham, Mass.) contributed 11 kills and three blocks, while
sophomore outside hitter Lorraine Wingenbach (Buffalo, N.Y.)
notched her third double-double of the tournament with 11 kills and
12 digs.
In the final match of the tournament, the Judges swept the
Westfield State College Owls, 30-19, 30-25, 30-21. Wingenbach
recorded a fourth double-double with 11 kills and 14 digs while
also contributing three service aces. Sophomore outside hitter
Becca Schwartz (Newcastle, N.H.) matched her classmate with 11
kills and had four aces, while junior libero and captain Shannon
Trees (Savannah, Ga.) had 14 digs and five aces.
Brandeis is next in action next weekend at the first University
Athletic Association (UAA) round robin of the season at Emory.
