ATLANTA, Ga. -- The Brandeis University volleyball team suffered a pair of conference losses on the second day of the first University Athletic Association (UAA) round robin at Emory University. The Judges (6-7, 0-3 UAA) fell to host Emory (12-5, 3-0 UAA), ranked No. 13 in the nation, 3-1, and dropped a 3-0 decision to Carnegie Mellon University (9-9, 2-1 UAA).

Against the Eagles, Brandeis dropped the first two games, 30-11, 30-18, but rallied to take game three, 34-32, before suffering a 30-19 loss in the deciding game. Rookie middle blocker Piera Carfagno (Los Angeles, Calif.) led the way offensively for the Judges with 13 kills, while sophomore outside hitter Lorraine Wingenbach (Buffalo, N.Y.) had 10 kills. Junior captain and libero Shannon Trees (Savannah, Ga.) had 10 digs to lead the way defensively, while sophomore setter Violette Ruggiero (Paradise Valley, Ariz.) had 31 assists.

The Judges had more competitive games against Carnegie Mellon, but were swept by the Tartans, 30-21, 30-22, 30-16. Rookie middle Bridget McAllister (Santa Clara, Calif.) had nine kills, while Carfagno added seven. Trees finished with 13 digs and Ruggiero contributed 28 assists.

Brandeis is next in action at next weekend's Crabtree Classic at Eastern Connecticut State University. The Judges were runners-up at that tournament in 2005.
