WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University volleyball team
never trailed tonight as the Judges defeated Lasell College, 3-0,
in Auerbach Arena. Game scores were 30-13, 30-8, 30-15.
After rookie middle blocker Piera Carfagno (Los Angeles, Calif.)
served three aces on the match's first three points, Brandeis
(13-14) wasn't challenged in game one. Game two was tied at three
before the Judges went on a 7-1 run before Lasell (17-12) called
its first timeout. The break didn't help, as the Judges closed out
on a 20-4 run, punctuated by a kill from junior opposite Ashley
Powers (Waltham, Mass.). Game three was tight early going, as the
Judges led, 12-10, but again pulled away, scoring 18 of the final
20 points of the match, clinching victory on a service ace by
rookie middle blocker Bridget McAllister (Santa Clara, Calif.)
Statistically, McAllister starred for Brandeis with a team-high 10
kills. She also had eight digs, tied for team-high honors, as well
as six blocks and six service aces. Sophomore setter Violette
Ruggiero (Paradise Valley, Ariz.) had 21 assists, eight digs and
four aces, while sophomore outside hitter Lorraine Wingenbach
(Buffalo, N.Y.) had seven kills. All the active members on the
Brandeis roster saw action tonight.
Lasell was paced in the losing effort by sophomore right-side
hitter Kelsey Schmidt (Malta, N.Y.) with four kills. Sophomore
defensive specialist Heatehr Rose (W. Roxbury, Mass.) had six digs,
while junior setter Katelyn Rausch (Hellertown, Pa.) had two
service aces.
