Volleyball finishes UAA play with 2-5 record after 3-0 win over Case

CHICAGO, Ill. -- The Brandeis University volleyball team picked up its second University Athletic Association (UAA) victory as the Judges defeated Case Western Reserve University in three games in the final match of the tournament. Earlier in the day, Brandeis took a game off of NYU, the No. 14 team in the nation before falling, 3-1.

In the win over Case (30-27, 30-22, 33-31), the Judges were led offensively by rookie middle blocker Piera Carfagno (Los Angeles, Calif.), who had 17 kills. She also added four service aces and a pair of blocks. Classmate Bridget McAllister (Santa Clara, Calif.) added 14 kills and five blocks, while sophomore outside hitter Lorraine Wingenbach (Buffalo, N.Y.) had a double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs. Sophomore setter Violette Ruggiero (Paradise Valley, Ariz.) went over the 50-assist mark for the fifth time in her career with 51 helpers to go with seven digs. Junior libero Shannon Trees (Savannah, Ga.) led the way defensively with 24 digs.

Against NYU, the Judges and Violets split the first two games, 18-30, 30-26. Brandeis was in game three before falling, 25-30, and NYU closed out the match, 30-17. Wingenbach led the way in today's opener with another double-double of 15 kills, a team-high, and 11 digs. She also had three blocks. Carfagno added 12 kills, three aces and three blocks, while junior opposite Ashley Powers (Waltham, Mass.) had five kills, five service aces and three blocks. Ruggiero had 41 assists and five digs, while Trees led the Judges with 13 digs.

Brandeis finished the weekend with a 10-12 record overall and a 2-5 mark in the UAA. The Association championships will be held Nov. 3-4 at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. The Judges will be the sixth seed, tying with Rochester 2-5, but falling to the Yellowjackets, 3-2, in the first UAA round robin.
