WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University volleyball team
(1-0) won its season opener in Auerbach Arena tonight, 3-1, over
visiting Rhode Island College (2-3). The Judges won the first two
games, 30-28, 30-26, before falling, 29-31, in game three. Coach
Michelle Kim's charges answered with their strongest game in game
four, closing out the match, 30-21.
Brandeis was offensively by sophomore outside hitter Lorraine
Wingenbach's (Buffalo, N.Y.) double-double. The honorable mention
All-UAA selection from a year ago had a team-high 12 kills and
added 12 digs. Sophomore outside hitter Becca Schwartz (Newcastle,
N.H.) and first-year middle blocker Bridget McAllister (Santa
Clara, Calif.) also had 10 kills.
Junior captain Shannon Trees (Savannah, Ga.) led the way
defensively with 15 digs from the libero spot, while sophomore
setter Violette Ruggiero (Paradise Valley, Ariz.) had 12 digs.
Rookie middle blocker Piera Carfagno (Los Angeles, Calif.) had a
team-leading four blocks (two solo) and four service aces.
The Judges are next in action this weekend at the Williams College
Invitational.
