Volleyball drops UAA opener to Rochester, 3-2

ATLANTA, Ga. -- The Brandeis University volleyball team suffered a tough defeat in their University Athletic Association (UAA) opener today at Emory University as the Judges fell to the University of Rochester, 3-2. Brandeis won the first two games, 30-22, 30-22, but could not close out the Yellowjackets. UR took the final three games, including two by two points, 30-28, 30-26, 16-14.

Brandeis was led by rookie middle blocker Piera Carfagno (Los Angeles, Calif.), who tallied a career-high 23 kills and added four service aces. Sophomore outside hitter Lorraine Wingenbach (Buffalo, N.Y.) recorded her ninth double-double in 11 matches this season with a season-best 19 kills and to go with 19 digs. Rookie MB Bridget McAllister (Santa Clara, Calif.) added 15 kills on the offensive end. Junior libero Shannon Trees (Savannah, Ga.) had a team-best 21 digs, while sophomore setter Violette Ruggiero (Paradise Valley, Ariz.) had a career-high 56 assists and 12 digs.

With the loss, Brandeis falls to 6-5, 0-1 in the UAA. Rochester improves to 14-3, 1-0. The Judges conclude the first UAA Round Robin tomorrow against host Emory, the No. 13 team in the nation and defending conference champion, and Carnegie Mellon University.
