PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- The Brandeis volleyball team earned a berth
in the UAA tournament fifth-place match today with a 3-1 over Case
Western Reserve University. Game scores were 30-19, 29-31, 30-24,
30-27. Offensively, rookie middle blocker Piera Carfagno (Los
Angeles, Calif.) and sophomore outside hitter Lorraine Wingenbach
(Buffalo, N.Y.) tied for team-high honors with 17 kills each, while
rookie middle Bridget McAllister (Santa Clara, Calif.) had 16.
Defensively McAllister led the squad with six blocks, while
Wingenbach and sophomore setter Violette Ruggiero (Paradise Valley,
Ariz.) each had 13 digs. Ruggiero tallied 57 assists to get the
double-double.
Brandeis and Chicago met for the third time this season in the
fifth-place match with the Maroons picking up their first win of
the series, 3-1. Brandeis won game one, 30-23, but then dropped
three in a row, 22-30, 21-30, 28-30. Wingenbach led the Judges with
12 kills to go with eight digs and five service aces, while
McAllister and junior opposite Ashley Powers (Waltham, Mass.) each
contributed eight kills. Junior outside hitter Becca Schwartz
(Newcastle, N.H.) had 10 digs to lead the team.
