Volleyball breaks into UAA win column with 3-2 victory over Chicago

CHICAGO, Ill. -- The Brandeis University volleyball team picked up its first conference win over the season as the Judges defeated the University of Chicago, 3-2, on the Maroons' home court to open up the second University Athletic Association round robin. The Judges also suffered a 3-0 loss at the hands of Washington University, the No. 2 team in the nation.

In the win over Chicago, the Judges won their longest game of the season in game one, 35-33, before falling in the next two, 21-30, 22-30. Coach Michelle Kim's squad rallied to take the final two games, 30-18, 15-12. Three Judges had double figures in kills, led by rookie Piera Carfagno (Los Angeles, Calif.), who had 15 kills. She also recorded five digs and three blocks. Sophomre outside hitter Lorraine Wingenbach (Buffalo, N.Y.) contributed 14 kills, eight digs and two service aces. Rookie middie blocker Bridget McAllister (Santa Clara, Calif.) rounded out the trio in double figures with 13 kills and two blocks. Sophomore setter Violette Ruggiero (Paradise Valley, Ariz.) had 42 assists in the match.

Washington University defeated the Judges handily, 30-25, 30-16, 30-14. Wingenbach finished with nine kills, while junior opposite Ashley Powers (Waltham, Mass.) had seven kills, four service aces and a block.
