CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (taken from an MIT press release) -- The Brandeis
University volleyball team improved to 3-0 on the season today with
a pair of wins in a trimatch at MIT. The Judges topped Johnson and
Wales University in the opener, 3-1, and defeated the hosts in the
first five-set match for the Judges, 3-2.
Against JWU, sophomore setter Abby Blasco
(Greely, Colo.) posted a double-double for Brandeis (3-0),
compiling 26 assists and 18 digs. Junior outside hitter
Piera Carfagno (Los Angeles, Calif.) registered a
team-high nine kills to go along with seven digs as, while senior
outside hitter Lorraine Wingenbach (Buffalo, N.Y.)
notched eight kills and 12 digs. Sophomore libero Lauren
Polinksy (White Plains, N.Y.) rounded out the Judges'
leaders with 10 digs and three aces.
Catherine Bravo paced Johnson & Wales’ attack with 14
kills while totaling 11 digs. Kristen Gawrys posted 26 digs and
seven kills as Audrey Warren totaled 18 assists and seven kills.
Nikki Balchunas bolstered the Wildcats’ effort with six kills
and eight digs.
Against MIT, Wingenbach had a solid outing, totaling 20 digs, 12
kills, and two aces while Carfagno posted 10 kills, nine digs, and
four blocks. Sophomore outside hitter Paige Blasco
(Greely, Colo.) recorded 17 kills and 11 digs, while sister Abby
notched 42 assists and nine digs.
Alex May paced MIT’s attack with 15 kills to go along with
12 digs. Jenny Li registered a team-high six blocks in addition to
two aces as Barden Cleeland contributed 11 kills and four blocks.
Cathy Melnikow tallied 42 assists, 15 digs, and three blocks while
Lindsay Hunting amassed 21 digs and two aces. Allison Hamilos and
Katrina Ellison finished with eight and seven kills, respectively,
as Natasha Jensen earned two aces.
The Judges are next in action on Tuesday evening when they host
Wellesley College at 7:00 p.m.
