
PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- The Brandeis volleyball team suffered two
more University Athletic Association losses at the first UAA round
robin at Carnegie Mellon University. Despite falling to NYU, 3-2,
and the University of Chicago, 3-0, the Judges were competitive, as
all six of their set losses were by five points or less, including
three two-point losses.
Brandeis jumped out to a two-set lead against NYU, but were unable
to close out the Violets. After winning the first two sets, 27-25,
25-18, the Judges fell in the last three, 25-21, 25-23, 15-13.
Junior Piera Carfagno (Los Angeles, Calif.) led
the way by recording a triple-double with 14 digs, 11 assists and
10 kills. Carfagno hit for a .250 percentage and added three
service aces and two blocks. Sophomore outside hitter Paige
Blasco (Greeley, Colo.) topped the team with 17 kills and
had 16 digs and three blocks defensively. Senior outside hitter
Lorraine Wingenbach (Buffalo, N.Y.) also had a
double-double performance with 11 kills and a team-high 19
digs.
Against Chicago, the Judges fell in three straight, 25-23, 25-22,
25-20. Junior Bridget McAllister (Santa Clara,
Calif.) was the offensive star with 12 kills and a .524 hitting
percentage, while adding eight digs. Blasco led the Judges with 15
digs. She also had eight kills and two service aces. Carfagno
contributed a career-high 26 assists with seven digs and one
block.
With the two losses, the Judges finished the first UAA Round Robin
at 0-3 in the conference and 9-7 overall. They will be in action at
a tri-match with Keene State at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy next
weekend before hosting the second UAA Round Robin on Oct. 18-19.
