Volleyball headed to seventh-place match at UAA Championships

PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- The Brandeis University volleyball team is headed to the seventh-place match at the 2014 University Athletic Association championships. The Judges fell in the quarterfinals to top-seeded Washington University in the opener, 25-9, 25-8, 25-20. In the consolation semifinals, they were bested by Case Western Reserve, 25-9, 25-12, 25-12. Brandeis will meet sixth-seeded NYU in the final match of the regular season. Coach Alesia Vaccari's squad will carry a 7-23 record into their final match.

Against Washington U., the Judges were led by senior Shemira Pennyman (Meriden, Conn./Francis T. Maloney), who had six kills and a team-high .118 hitting percentage. Junior middle blocker Maddie Engeler (Sandusky, Ohio/St. Mary Central Catholic), who had four kills and two solo blocks. Senior Elsie Bernaiche (Plantsville, Conn./Southington) had a team-high seven digs.

In the Case match, senior Carly Gutner-Davis (Del Mar, Calif./Canyon Crest Acad.) had a match-high nine kills, while Pennyman had five kills and no errors in 12 attacks for a .417 percentage. Unfortunately for the Judges, Case - coached by Brandeis alumna Karen Farrell '93 - made just four attack errors to Brandeis's 19. Bernaiche had 17 digs to lead all players.
