Volleyball drops a pair of four-setters at home as part of MIT Invite

WALTHAM, Mass. -- The Brandeis Volleyball team dropped a pair of four-set matches today at the 2015 MIT Invitational in a pair of contests played in Shapiro Gym. The Judges fell to Cabrini (Pa.) College in their opener and Colby College in the second match of the day. 

Against the Cavaliers, the visitors took the first set, 25-18, but the Judges bounced back to take the second, 25-20. Cabrini rolled to the third set win, 25-10, before using a late run to win the fourth, 25-13. 

In the Colby match, the Judges took a 1-0 lead, marking the first time this season they had won the first set, 25-18. The Mules answered with a 25-21 in the second, jumping out to an 11-2 lead before fending off a Brandeis comeback. Colby scored nine unanswered points in the third to extend an 11-10 lead to 21-10 en route to a 25-16 before closing out the match, 25-20. 

Leading the way on offense for the Judges was senior middle blocker Maddie Sullivan (Huron, Ohio/St. Mary Central Catholic), who had eight kills in each match. She also had three block assists.

Rookie outside hitter Grace Krumpack (Cincinnati, Ohio / Colerain) had a fine all-around evening, recording a career-high 17 digs in the opener, then contributing seven kills and 12 digs in the second match. 

Rookie middle hitter Zara Platt (Fountain Valley, Calif. / Fountain Valley) came up one shy of her career-best in the Cabrini match with seven kills. She had five kills against the Mules. 

Rookie libero Yvette Cho (San Diego, Calif. / Rancho Bernardo) led both matches defensively, with 18 digs against the Cavaliers and 16 against Colby. Classmates Allison Harmsworth (Bradenton, Fla / Newsome) and Leah Pearlman (El Paso, Texas/El Paso) led the team with 11 and 18 assists, respectively in the two matches. Harmsworth also had 10 assists in the second contest.

Brandeis (2-7) returns to action tomorrow at  MIT with matches against Springfield and Edgewood (Wisc.).
