Volleyball falls to Amherst, Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – Facing a pair of foes that had one loss between them this season, the Brandeis University volleyball team dropped a pair of matches to Amherst and Middlebury today in Vermont, both by 3-0 scores. Set scores were 25-14, 25-19, 25-14 against Amherst and 25-14, 25-15, 25-13 against Middlebury. With the losses, the Judges fall to 4-10 on the season.

In the opener against Amherst, Brandeis was led by sophomore setter Ines Grom-Mansenecal (Cincinnati, Ohio/Wyoming), who had 21 assists and 10 digs for her second-straight double-double and sixth of the season. First-year outside hitter Lara Verstovsek (Bellaire, Texas/Episcopal) led the offense with nine kills, and added 10 digs to just miss a double-double of her own. Senior Stephanie Borr (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) added seven kills, while senior Kaitlyn Oh (Santa Clara, Calif. / Cupertino) led Brandeis on defense with 12 digs, tied for match-high honors. Amherst was paced by the tandem of Jamie Dailey and Sophie Launsbach, who combined for 32 of the team's 44 kills, six more than the entire Brandeis lineup.

Grom-Mansenecal had another fine all-around match against Middlebury with 17 assists and five digs, plus a career-high five kills. She tied for the team-high in kills with Borr and senior middle hitter Kaisa Newberg (Reno, Nev. / Sage Ridge School). Oh had 17 digs, a match-high, while Verstovsek had 13, but was held to just four kills. The Panthers were paced by Maggie Wise with a match-high 10 kills and team-best 16 digs. The Panthers also had nine service aces to just two for the Judges, while out-blocking Brandeis, 5-1.

The Judges return to action on Tuesday evening at 6 p.m. when they play host to St. Joseph's (Maine) College.
