WELLESLEY, Mass. – The Brandeis University volleyball team rode a pair of double-double performances, including one from an unlikely source, as the Judges defeated Wellesley College, 3-0, on the road tonight. Set scores were 26-24, 25-15, 25-22. With the win, Brandeis improves to 7-17 on the season, while the Blue fall to 8-11.

"This was a great win for us," said head coach Alesia Bennett.

Brandeis was paced offensively by first-year outside hitter Lara Verstovsek (Bellaire, Texas/Episcopal), who had team-highs with 12 kills, three service aces and three block assists. She also contributed 11 digs for her fifth double-double of the season.

The Judges' more surprising double-double performance came from sophomore defensive specialist Ella Pereira (Redondo Beach, Calif./Rolling Hills Prep). Given a chance to play front row because of a slightly shorthanded lineup, Pereira had 10 kills and made just one error in 15 chances for a .600 hitting percentage on the evening. She also had a team-high 18 digs. "Ella played outside hitter in high school, and she has lots of shots from playing beach volleyball," said Bennett. "She really stepped up tonight."

The Judges also got 11 kills from junior outside hitter Amelia Oppenheimer (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands). Oppenheimer had just two errors in 25 attacks for a .360 hitting percentage. She also had a pair of service aces on the final two points of the match to secure the victory. Sophomore setter Ines Grom-Mansenecal (Cincinnati, Ohio/Wyoming) had 33 assists, her season-best in a three-set match, while helping the Judges to a season-high .265 hitting percentage (40 kills, 14 errors, 98 attacks). She just missed a double-double with nine digs. "Ines did a great job in getting us one-on-one opportunities to win points," Bennett said.

Wellesley's Nicole Doerges led all players with 17 kills, but no other Blue player had more than six. Claire Bialek had 14 digs and Izzy Siebold had 27 assists for the hosts.

The win for the Judges snaps a two-match overall losing streak this season, as well as a two-match losing streak in their series against Wellesley. It was just the second win over the Blue since 2010 and their first sweep of Wellesley since 2006.

Brandeis will wrap up its non-conference schedule on Saturday at noon against Springfield College when they celebrate Senior Day.
