Ferebee, Dienstag Event Winners on Day Two of Gompei Invitational

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Brandeis swim and dive team continued their midseason championship meet today at WPI. The Judges had two records set and four individual event winners on the day. After day two, the combined team is in fifth out of 10 with 2247.5 points.

 

The men had two top qualifiers come out of the morning session. Senior Benton Ferebee (Memphis, Tenn. / Memphis University School) placed first in the 50-yard backstroke with a time of 24.53, and junior Sam Dienstag (Wilmette, Ill. / New Trier) placed first in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:40.49. The Judges had 16 individual swims at finals. At night, first-year Sam Bundy (Charlotte, N.C. / Ardrey Kell High School) was the top finisher in the 400-yard individual medley, finishing eighth with a time of 4:13.91. Ferebee was the top finisher for the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 54.13, earning him eighth place. In the 50-yard butterfly, first-year Eric Cherny (Brooklyn, N.Y. / Basis Independent Brooklyn) was the top finisher, placing sixth with a time of 23.80. The Judges then Dienstag followed up his top finish in prelims with the event win, finishing with a time of 1:40.89. The Judges then followed with back to back event wins. Dienstag took home the win in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:40.89, while Ferebee won the 50-yard backstroke with a time of 24.25. Sophomore Andrew Ngo (San Gabriel, Calif. / Gabrielino) was the top finisher in the 100-yard breaststroke, finishing eighth with a time of 59.16. For the relays, Cherny and Dienstag teamed up with first-year Eric Xiao (College Station, Texas / AM Consolidated High School) and senior James Smith (Lexington, Mass. / Lexington High School) for the 200-yard freestyle relay to finish eighth with a time of 1:26.86. The 400-yard medley relay was made up of Ferebee, Ngo, Smith, and Dienstag. The team finished seventh with a time of 3:31.92.

 

In the morning for the women, there were two new records set. Senior Bailey Gold (Berkeley Heights, N.J. / Governor Livingston) broke her own 200-yard freestyle record by 0.1 seconds with a time of 1:55.89. She placed fourth for finals. Senior Ema Rennie (Dublin, Ohio / Dublin Scioto) broke Gold's record in the 50-yard butterfly by 0.27 with a time of 25.85 to place first for finals. The Judges had 20 individual swims at finals. In the evening, first-year Audrey Teo (Palo Alto, Calif. / Palo Alto High School) was the top finisher in the 400-yard individual medley, finishing 13th with a time of 4:56.62. In the 100-yard backstroke, junior Monica Iizuka (Chatham, N.J. / Chatham) was the top finisher, placing third with a time of 58.79. Rennie returned at night to set the team record once again in the 50-yard butterfly by another 0.45 seconds, winning the event with a time of 25.40. In the 200-yard freestyle, Gold stayed in fourth place with a time of 1:55.91, only 0.02 seconds off her record from the morning. Iizuka came back from the 100-yard backstroke to win the 50-yard backstroke with a time of 27.15. In the 100-yard breaststroke, Teo was the top finisher again, placing 10th with a time of 1:10.25. For the relays, Rennie, Iizuka, Gold, and sophomore Chloe Gonzalez (Miami Beach, Fla. / Miami Beach Senior High) to place fourth with a time of 1:37.46. In the 400-yard medley relay, Iizuka, Teo, Gold, and Rennie teamed up to place fourth with a time of 3:59.71.

 

The Judges finish up the Gompei Invitational tomorrow, December 4th with prelims starting at 9 AM.
