Women move past Penn State-Behrend, 2-0, advance to 2nd round of tournament

DALLAS, Pa. -- The Brandeis University women's soccer team advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III tournament today with a 2-0 win over Penn State-Behrend. The Judges improve to 13-4-2 on the season and will meet host Misericordia University tomorrow at 5 p.m. for a chance to move to the round of 16. The Lions end their season at 16-6-1.

Brandeis got all the scoring they would need in the 18th minute. Sophomore Cidney Moscovitch (Coral Springs, Fla./Coral Glades) streaked down the right side of the field, cut inside and finished with a shot to the far left post. The goal was her fourth of the season, but first since September 30.

Despite outshooting PSUB 12-2 in the first half, including a flurry of activity in the final moments, the Judges didn't find any breathing room until the second half. In the 59th minute, junior forward Holly Szafran (Homewood, Ala./Newton North) notched her second goal of the season and 11th of her career when a free kick rattled off the crossbar and in.

That was all the Judges need to register their 12th shutout of the season, second-most in program history. Senior Michelle Savuto (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) made one first-half save on the Lions' Shelby Lloyd in the seventh minute, but that was the only test of the match. Sophomore Alexis Grossman (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) did not face any shots in the second half. Penn State Behrend's Taylor Troyan kept her side within striking distance by making seven saves.

With the with, the Judges will meet Misericordia for the second time in three years in the postseason. Brandeis faced the Cougars in the Elite Eight of the 2012 NCAA tournament and dropped a 2-0 decision.
