Gold sets four more records on Gompei Day 2

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Brandeis swimming and diving teams completed Day 2 of the Gompei Invitational hosted by WPI on Saturday. The Judges had a combined 30 individual finals swims, and the women set four new school records on the day. Their combined scores have the Judges in 7th place with 2436 points.

On the women's side, junior Bailey Gold (Berkeley Heights, N.J. / Governor Livingston) continued her dominant weekend with four more school records, two relay and two individual. The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Gold, first-year Chloe Gonzalez (Miami Beach, Fla. / Miami Beach Senior), sophomore Monica Iizuka (Chatham, N.J. / Chatham), and junior Ema Rennie (Dublin, Ohio / Dublin Scioto) took third with a time of 1:37.82, a new school record by over a second. After tying for a new school record in the morning, Gold and Rennie finished second and third, respectively, in the 50-yard butterfly with Gold setting a new school record with a time of 26.12. Gold's second individual school record came in the 200-yard freestyle where she finished fourth with a time of 1:55.99. The 400-yard medley relay team of Iizuka, senior Olivia Stebbins (Willington, Conn. / Edwin O Smith), Gold, and Gonzalez finished second with a school-record time of 3:57.98, making them the first 400-yard medley relay team to break 4 minutes in Brandeis' history. Other A finalists included Iizuka, first-year Anastasia Bekou (Limassol, Cyprus / Laniteio Lyceum), and Gonzalez. Iizuka and Bekou finished fourth and sixth in the 100-yard backstroke with times of 58.54 and 59.52, respectively. Gonzalez joined Gold in the 200-yard freestyle A final, finishing eighth with a time of 1:58.94. The women had a total of 13 individual finals swims on the night.

On the men's side, senior Benton Ferebee (Germantown, Tenn. / Memphis University School) had the top individual swim of the day, placing third in the 50-yard backstroke with a time of 24.09. Ferebee was also the lone Brandeis A finalist in the 100-yard backstroke, finishing ninth with a time of 53.59. Other A finalists for the Judges include senior Brendon Lu (Basking Ridge, N.J. / Ridge), junior James Barno (Ballston Spa, N.Y. / Ballston Spa), sophomores Sam Dienstag (Wilmette, Ill. / New Trier) and Seth Shin (Los Angeles, Calif. / Loyola), and first-year Andrew Ngo (San Gabriel, Calif. / Gabrielino). Lu finished fifth in the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:13.34. Barno finished fifth in the 50-yard butterfly with a time of 23.63. Dienstag finished seventh in the 200-yard freestyle. Shin and Ngo finished ninth and tenth in the 100-yard breaststroke with times of 59.17 and 59.93, respectively. Dienstag, Ferebee, and Ngo were joined by sophomore Dylan Levy (Marlton, N.J. / Cherokee) in the 200-yard freestyle relay, which finished ninth with a time of 1:27.33. The 400-yard medley relay team of Ferebee, Lu, Barno, and Dienstag also finished ninth with a time of 3:31.63. The men had a total of 17 individual finals swims on the night.

The Gompei Invitational concludes on Sunday from WPI with a preliminary session starting at 9:00 AM and a finals session starting at 6:00 PM.
