WORCESTER, Mass. – The Brandeis swimming and diving teams wrapped up the Gompei Invitational hosted by WPI on Sunday. The Judges had a combined 26 individual finals swims on the day, and the women set two new school records. Their combined scores earned the Judges 7th place for the meet with 3400 points.
On the women's side, there were two school records set in one event. First-year Chloe Gonzalez (Miami Beach, Fla. / Miami Beach Senior) set the school record in the 100-yard freestyle from the B final with a time of 53.46. In the next heat, junior Ema Rennie (Dublin, Ohio / Dublin Scioto) broke that record with a time of 53.41, earning her eighth place in the event. Rennie and Gonzalez were joined on the 400-yard freestyle relay by junior Bailey Gold (Berkeley Heights, N.J. / Governor Livingston) and sophomore Monica Iizuka (Chatham, N.J. / Chatham) that finished fifth and set a new school record with a time of 3:37.00. Other A finalists on the day included Gold and Iizuka. Iizuka finished ninth in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:11.33. Gold finished second in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:07.42. The women had 13 individual finals swims on the day.
On the men's side, sophomore Sam Dienstag (Wilmette, Ill. / New Trier) was the standout performer of the day. Dienstag won the 1650-yard freestyle with a time of 15:44.82, beating the second place swimmer by over 30 seconds. Dienstag was joined on the 400-yard freestyle relay by senior Benton Ferebee (Germantown, Tenn. / Memphis University School), sophomore Dylan Levy (Marlton, N.J. / Cherokee), and senior Brendon Lu (Basking Ridge, N.J. / Ridge) that took ninth place with a time of 3:12.16. Other A finalists on the night included sophomore Seth Shin (Los Angeles, Calif. / Loyola) and first-years Andrew Ngo (San Gabriel, Calif. / Gabrielino) and Tal Spector (Phoenix, Ariz. / Herberger Young Scholars Academy). Ngo finished eighth in the 100-yard individual medley with a time of 54.56. Spector finished tenth in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:58.90. Shin finished fourth in the 50-yard breaststroke with a time of 27.61. The men had a total of 13 individual finals swimmers on the night.
The Judges return to action after the new year on Saturday, January 22 at 1:00 PM when they travel to Keene, N.H. for a tri-meet against Keene State College and Bridgewater State University.
